Meeting Thomas
Autism and personal space
In a bright classroom, children sat in a circle. Arthur and Sarah were excited to meet their new friend, Thomas. Thomas was a cheerful boy who loved to talk. As he spoke, he moved closer and closer to his friends. Arthur and Sarah felt a little uncomfortable.
1
Arthur whispered to Sarah, "Thomas is nice, but he stands too close." Sarah nodded, agreeing with Arthur. They both liked Thomas but didn't know how to tell him. Thomas, with a big smile, continued chatting happily. He didn't notice the problem.
2
The teacher noticed the children whispering. She decided it was time to talk about personal space. "Class, did you know some people have autism?" she asked. Arthur and Sarah listened carefully. Their teacher explained that Thomas had autism and sometimes didn't know when he was too close.
3
The teacher had an idea to help Thomas. She told the class about the 'magic circle'. "Imagine a circle around you," she said. "If someone steps inside without asking, it's too close." The children liked the idea and thought it was fun.
4
Arthur and Sarah decided to explain the magic circle to Thomas. They gently told him about personal space. "We like when you talk to us, but sometimes you stand inside our magic circle," said Sarah. Thomas listened carefully and nodded. He wanted to make his friends happy.
5
The next day, Thomas tried to remember the magic circle. He spoke to Arthur and Sarah from a little further away. "Is this better?" he asked with a hopeful smile. Arthur and Sarah clapped and said, "Yes, much better!" Thomas felt proud of himself.
6
Thomas continued practicing keeping the right distance. His friends were happy and felt comfortable. They played games and shared stories together. Everyone enjoyed being around Thomas. The magic circle made a big difference.
7
The teacher was proud of the class for understanding each other. Arthur and Sarah learned more about autism. Thomas learned about personal space and felt more connected to his friends. The classroom was filled with laughter and friendship. They all knew that everyone is special in their own way.
